Enthusiasts throw the words "knock," "detonation," and "pre-ignition" around like they're synonyms. They aren't. They're two different combustion failures with different causes, different sounds, and radically different consequences. Confusing them can cost you an engine.

Detonation is abnormal combustion after the spark fires. The plug lights the flame front normally, but as pressure and temperature climb in the unburned end-gas ahead of the flame, that end-gas auto-ignites spontaneously before the flame front reaches it. Two flame fronts collide, producing a pressure spike that rings the combustion chamber like a bell. That's the "pinging" or "marbles in a can" sound. Detonation is loud because the shock wave excites the block at its natural frequency (typically 6–8 kHz for a small-block V8), which is exactly what your knock sensor is tuned to hear.

Pre-ignition is combustion that starts before the spark plug fires. Something hot in the chamber — a glowing carbon deposit, an overheated exhaust valve edge, a spark plug with too-hot a heat range, or a sharp casting flash — ignites the mixture during the compression stroke. The piston is still coming up while pressure is already skyrocketing. You often can't hear pre-ignition until it's too late; it's quieter than detonation but far more destructive.

Why pre-ignition kills engines fast: peak cylinder pressure occurs before TDC instead of ~15° ATDC, meaning the piston is fighting the pressure rise instead of being pushed by it. Pressures climb to 2–3× normal peaks. Pistons melt holes through the crown, ring lands crack off, and head gaskets blow — often within seconds.

Real-world example: The 2013–2016 Ford EcoBoost 1.6L had documented pre-ignition events on hot restarts. Fuel vapor pooling in the intake port during heat soak would ignite off hot valve deposits before the coil fired. Ford's fix was a software calibration change to fuel timing plus a cooling system update — because you can't spark-retard your way out of pre-ignition. The ignition already happened.

Rule of thumb: If you hear pinging under load and adding octane or retarding timing cures it, that's detonation. If your plugs show melted electrode tips and aluminum splash on the porcelain, that's pre-ignition — and you likely need a colder plug, better cooling, or to find the glowing hot spot.

Knock sensors detect detonation. They generally do not catch pre-ignition until damage is already done.
