Filling a hole in hollow tube or thin-wall stock is one of the more frustrating problems a hobby welder runs into: too much heat and you blow through, too little and you get a cold lump sitting on top of the void. The classic "old-school" fix is to bridge the gap with a piece of scrap — a copper backer, a coat-hanger wire pushed through, or a nail tacked in place — so the puddle has something to grab onto while you build up the surrounding metal.
