A traditional multi-angle valve job uses three, five, or seven discrete flat cuts that approximate a curve. A radiused valve seat throws away the flats entirely — the seat transition is machined as a single continuous curve, blending from the combustion chamber into the seat contact band and down into the bowl with no measurable break points. It's what happens when a porter looks at a 5-angle job and asks, "why not infinite angles?"
The airflow argument is simple: air hates corners. Every angle transition in a multi-angle job creates a tiny separation zone where boundary layer thickens and streamlines detach. Three angles have two transitions. Five angles have four. A radiused seat has zero. On a flow bench, a well-executed radiused seat typically gains 2-4% at low lift (0.100"-0.250") over a good 5-angle job, and 1-2% at high lift. The gains are small but real, and they're weighted where street engines actually spend time — on the seat and just off it.
The catch is seat contact width. A flat 45° seat gives you an unambiguous contact band — usually 0.040"-0.060" wide — that you can measure with Prussian blue. A radiused seat is theoretically a line contact, which sounds terrible for heat transfer and sealing. In practice, the valve deforms slightly under seating load and combustion pressure, and the radius profile is designed so the contact spreads to roughly 0.030"-0.050" under working conditions. But this only works if the radius matches the valve face geometry precisely.
Real-world example: Cosworth's DFV Formula 1 heads used radiused seats starting in the late 1960s, machined on custom form tools ground to match specific valve face curvatures. Modern CNC seat-and-guide machines like the Serdi 100 or Newen Contour can generate any radius or blended profile from a CAD file, which is why radiused seats went from exotic F1 tech to available-at-your-local-porter in the last 20 years.
Rule of thumb: A radiused seat needs a valve with a matched radius on the valve face — you can't run a radiused seat against a standard 45° valve and expect it to seal. Budget an extra $40-80 per valve for matched-radius valves (often from the same shop that cut the seats). Also expect tighter valve lash checks for the first 500 miles as the contact band bed-ins from line to width.
Radiused seats aren't magic — they're the logical endpoint of the multi-angle progression. Three angles beat one. Five beat three. Infinite angles (a true curve) beat five, if you can machine and match them.
