Microraptor is one of the most genuinely strange creatures in the fossil record: a crow-sized dromaeosaurid from the Early Cretaceous of China with flight feathers on all four limbs, not just its arms. That four-winged body plan has driven decades of debate about how powered flight evolved in theropods — whether early fliers glided from trees, ran and flapped from the ground, or did something in between that no living bird does today.

What makes Microraptor specimens especially valuable is the preservation: melanosome analysis of the fossilized feathers revealed it was likely iridescent black, similar to a modern crow or starling. That was one of the first times paleontologists could credibly assign a real color to a non-avian dinosaur, and it changed how we picture the Mesozoic.

Stomach contents have also been recovered from multiple specimens, showing Microraptor ate fish, small mammals, and even other birds — a tiny but versatile predator. Even in a short format, that's a lot of substance for a viewer who's never heard of the animal.
