Shell elements are the workhorse of thin-walled FEA — sheet metal, pressure vessels, aircraft skins, ship hulls. They collapse a 3D solid down to a 2D surface with a thickness property, saving enormous compute cost. But that abstraction hides a trap: the mesh sits on a reference surface, and where that surface lives relative to the actual material matters. Get the offset wrong and your model looks perfectly correct in the pre-processor while silently reporting stiffness, mass, and stress values that are meaningfully off.
This is the second entry in areaFEA's shell element series, and it drills into exactly that failure mode: how shell thickness and offset are defined, what happens geometrically when you mesh along the midsurface versus the top or bottom face, and why the choice cascades into wrong contact behavior, wrong section properties, and wrong results even on a model that passes every visual sanity check.
