The Bagger 293 is a German bucket-wheel excavator built by TAKRAF for lignite (brown coal) surface mining in the Rhineland. It holds the Guinness record as the heaviest terrestrial vehicle ever constructed: roughly 14,200 tonnes, 96 metres tall, and 225 metres long. The description claims it moves 240,000 cubic metres of earth per day — enough to fill a football stadium.
What makes the Bagger interesting from an engineering standpoint isn't just the size but the problem it solves: continuous-flow mining. Instead of drill-blast-truck cycles, the rotating bucket wheel chews into the overburden constantly, dumping onto an internal conveyor that hands off to a kilometres-long external belt system. It crawls on caterpillar tracks at about 10 m/min and is operated by a crew of five.
At ~30 seconds this won't go deep, but if you've never seen one in motion the scale is genuinely hard to grasp from photos. Worth the half-minute as a primer before searching for a longer documentary.
