A commercial hot air rework station can run several hundred dollars, so a genuine sub-$20 DIY build with closed-loop temperature control is an attractive weekend project — and a good excuse to learn a handful of real electronics skills at once.
The build combines a heating element and blower (typically a repurposed hair dryer motor or 12V fan paired with a nichrome-wrapped ceramic core) with a K-type thermocouple for feedback and a microcontroller-driven PID or bang-bang controller to hold setpoint. Expect to see MOSFET or TRIAC switching for the heater, PWM control for airflow, and a small display for temperature readout.
Why it's worth watching: SMD rework is one of those skills that unlocks a huge chunk of modern electronics repair — reflowing QFN packages, salvaging chips from dead boards, replacing bulging caps on motherboards. Even if you buy a commercial unit later, understanding what's inside (thermocouple linearization, why airflow matters as much as temperature, how the heater is protected from thermal runaway) makes you a much better user of the tool.
Watch for: how they handle thermocouple amplification (MAX6675 is common), whether the airflow is actually controllable or just on/off, and any safety interlocks on the heater.
