When a datasheet claims an enclosure is "waterproof" or "dust-tight," those words are marketing until you find the rating code. Two standards dominate: IP (Ingress Protection, IEC 60529) used globally, and NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) used in North America. They overlap but aren't interchangeable.
Decoding IP codes. The format is IPXY, where X rates solids and Y rates liquids:
An IP67 phone survives being dropped in a puddle. IP68 promises continuous immersion — but the depth is manufacturer-defined, not standardized. IP69K is common on food-processing gear that gets sprayed at 80°C and 1450 psi.
NEMA ratings cover the same territory but bundle in factors IP ignores: corrosion resistance, ice buildup, and gasket integrity under thermal cycling. Common ones:
Rule of thumb for conversion: NEMA meets or exceeds the equivalent IP rating, but not vice versa. A NEMA 4X enclosure satisfies IP66 requirements; an IP66 enclosure does not automatically qualify as NEMA 4X because it wasn't tested for corrosion or icing.
Real-world example. A wastewater lift-station control panel outdoors near saltwater needs NEMA 4X (stainless 316), not just NEMA 4. Specifying plain NEMA 4 painted steel means rust perforation within 2–3 years and a warranty claim the manufacturer will reject. The extra $400 for 4X pays back on the first callback avoided.
Gotcha: An enclosure only holds its rating if installed correctly. Cable entries need matching-rated glands (an IP68 box with an IP20 grommet is an IP20 box). Every unused knockout must be sealed with a rated plug.
