It's the sacrificial surface between your workpiece and the machine bed, and if it isn't dead flat and perfectly parallel to the spindle's Z plane, every engraving job inherits that error — a shallow letter here, a gouged edge there, especially on wide pieces where a few thousandths of an inch of tilt becomes visible depth variation.
