The V-band clamp is only as good as the single bolt holding it closed. That bolt sees enormous mechanical advantage through the clamp's circumferential geometry, and getting the torque wrong causes either leaks or catastrophic separation at 1600°F. Understanding why is the difference between a header that survives a season and one that lets go on the dyno.
The force multiplication problem. A V-band clamp works like a hose clamp with a wedge cross-section. When you torque the T-bolt, the clamp band contracts around the flanges, and the V-groove converts radial clamping force into axial face-loading force. The wedge angle (typically 20° per side, 40° total included) gives a mechanical advantage of roughly 1/tan(20°) ≈ 2.75x. So 20 ft-lb on the bolt generates around 55 ft-lb of equivalent axial face clamp load — but distributed around the entire flange circumference.

Note these are inch-pounds, not foot-pounds — a very common mistake that snaps the T-bolt or crushes the band.
Real-world example. On a Precision 6266 turbo installation using a 3" downpipe V-band, the spec is roughly 100 in-lb. Torquing to 100 foot-pounds (a 12x error easy to make with a 1/2" drive wrench) will either shear the M8 T-bolt or permanently deform the clamp band, ruining its ability to grip. Once the band yields, replacing it is the only fix — you can't re-torque a stretched clamp.
Retention and heat cycling. V-band bolts loosen from thermal cycling as the flange stack expands and contracts. Three retention strategies dominate: safety wire through a drilled T-bolt head (racing standard), Nord-Lock wedge-lock washers that use cam action to resist rotation, and high-temp thread locker like Loctite 272 rated to 450°F. Nylock nuts fail — the nylon insert melts within minutes of exhaust exposure.
Rule of thumb: Re-torque V-band clamps after the first heat cycle. The flange faces and gasket ring settle into the V-groove, and initial preload drops 15-25%. Bring them back to spec, then check again after 100 miles or one dyno session.
