You can port a head until your die grinder wears out, but if the valve job is wrong, air still stumbles as it crosses into the chamber. The valve job is the machined interface between the seat insert and the valve face — and it's where the last inch of intake flow lives or dies.

A stock production valve job is typically a single 45-degree cut: one angle where the valve face contacts the seat. It seals fine, but airflow has to make an abrupt turn from the port bowl, across the seat, and into the chamber. That sharp transition creates flow separation right where velocity is highest.

A three-angle valve job smooths the path with three cuts around the 45-degree seat:

Five-angle and radiused (CNC "form-cut") valve jobs go further, replacing the discrete angles with a curved profile that matches computed flow lines. On a small-block Chevy 23-degree head, going from a stock single-angle to a competent three-angle job typically gains 15–25 CFM at 0.200" lift — the low-lift region where street engines spend most of their time.

Real-world example: Ford's 4.6L Two-Valve PI heads flowed roughly 180 CFM at 0.500" lift stock. Cutting a proper three-angle job and blending the bowl into the bottom cut — no port work above the seat — regularly pushes those same heads past 210 CFM. Rule of thumb — seat width vs. flow: A wider seat cools the valve better but chokes low-lift flow. On intakes, aim for the narrowest seat that still holds compression through your service interval — around 0.050" for a street engine, 0.035"–0.040" for race-only builds where valves get inspected often. Exhaust seats stay wider (0.070"+) because the valve dumps heat into the seat during each cycle.

Get the seat concentricity within 0.001" TIR to the valve guide, or the valve won't close square and the whole job leaks.
